Back to the Basic Shapes

My wife and I homeschool our daughter and I do art subject with her on the weekends. The last lesson was on shapes. Using basic shapes to block out the object to be drawn.

Drawing as a kid I did not understand stand this and limited my mind to what I can draw or paint. Laying out the shapes first opens up the world to everything. Such a basic thing, but so pivotal.

To help explain this to my 8 year old I set up a three object still life in the room. Shape easy to recognize.

We both painted the still life together and this help answer questions that arose in the process. For placement and perspective. As well as the “why doesn’t mine look like yours?”

Well lots of reasons, you are painting at a different angle to the objects than me. Your interpretation of the object in the artist give right, and time and experience practicing.

All in all was fun to paint with her. daughter’s was done in acrylics on brown paper and mine done in soft pastel on primed canvas.

Have a great day,

Taylor Davis
